Jumia Launches Its First App For Android Devices

Jumia has launched its native app for Android devices.

Jumia is that reputable online shopping store that you can buy all your things from and sent to you. Its the Amazon of Nigeria and its present in Nigeria and 4 other African countries.

To further make a statement of how serious they are in getting people to shop, they have released their first Android app to the Google Play Store.
This app gives you access to buy all your items,  be it phones, computers,  fashion materials etc.beware though, the prices displayed from the app seem to differ from what is presented on the official website www.jumia.com.ng.

Once you choose an item that catch your attention, you are presented with another screen showing you the rating, specifications and price of the item. Furthermore, you can add the item to cart or select the "call to order"  option which immediately activate a phone call.
Finally, you can directly share items Info to Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites using the share icon at the top right corner of the window.

As you might have guessed, the app is lightweight and would serve as an extension of its online web page.

As the competition for supremacy continue to soar in the online retail department in Nigeria, the likes of Konga, Dealdey should be thinking of releasing an app soon to also cater for their customers.

BlackBerry Trade-In Program Coming To Nigeria Soon

Seeing how successful BlackBerry trade-in program had been in India where the sales of BlackBerry Z10 have boosted by 40%, it won't be surprising to see BlackBerry doing the same in other areas and Africa especially - in fact it's an excellent idea for it to be done worldwide.

As far as Africa is concerned, Nigeria is a place where a lot of smartphone users own BlackBerry devices more than any other smartphone.

However, there are more older BlackBerry devices being used than there are BlackBerry 10 devices used due to the high price of the newer BlackBerry 10 devices.

Consequently, it would be a wise choice to extend the trade-in programme used in India in Nigeria. The result seen in India would automatically be seen in Nigeria also.

It shouldn't be too difficult to know that this tactic is very good in retaining doubtful fans and fans that are about to bolt out of the BlackBerry atmosphere.

Furthermore BlackBerry 10 users will automatically increase the morale of developers to start developing apps for the device. Everyone including BlackBerry would be happy!

For now, the programme in India only see trade in programme for Z10 only; Q10 and Q5 aren't included.

Well, we shall keep you guys posted if such move is brought to other countries and Nigeria most especially.

NCC Set To Implement Mobile Number Portability For Cheaper Calls

Updated:

Call tariffs are expected to be cheaper in Nigeria for 2013 due to mobile number portability scheme (MNP). There can't be a better news for Nigerians. You will notice a lot of radio adverts have started rolling out to educate the masses on how it works.
According to information being propagated from the NCC website, it will be free to register for this service.
It is also available to both prepaid and postpaid users and will e available for GLO, MTN, ETISALAT and AIRTEL subscribers.

Mobile Number Portability

Mobile number portability scheme would enable subscribers to retain their mobile numbers if they migrate from one network to another. This means that should a subscriber choose to switch from Glo to MTN, for example, the same mobile number will continue to work with the new carrier (MTN).

This scheme foundation had already begun since last year and should be completed during the first to second quarter of the year 2013.

The benefits of this development is that consumers will be able to switch from one carrier to another without the fear of changing cell number.
Also, this will propel carriers to improve the quality of their services since changing carrier will not affect cell number anymore. You will note that sms are now charged at N4 across all carriers; which is good. Furthermore, call tariffs will significantly reduce.

You will note that complains have trailed the NCC office in the last quarter last year due to bad quality of service.
Therefore, there's great chance that carriers will want to improve QoS so as to keep a subscriber from changing carrier.

For me, this is a welcomed development and it will be greeted with great razzmatazz by Nigerians that have been paying significant price for mobile calls and internet data with the persisting bad QoS.
As in anything that starts fresh, there will be hiccups but it usually gets better with time. Lets support this project and push for better data, voice and SMS services from these telecommunication companies.
